As with the evolution of any city's club scene, Shanghai's introduction to clubs "with attitude" can be seen at the VIP Room, a former theatre with 25 foot ceilings, and a pretty sweet bar. Reaction has been mixed, as those who enjoy these types of clubs, found in places like New York, LA, Paris, and London, feel at home. For the rest of the peoples, the inability to reserve a table, or feel like a VIP can be intimidating.
Tables occupy a large portion of the main room, so it is advised to book a table well in advance (if they let you) or you might find yourself standing around looking at everyone else relaxed comfortably wondering why you didn't think of booking a table before you came.
And although the name "VIP" might create the image of super-expensive cocktails, the prices at the VIP Room are in line with other upscale clubs in Shanghai, and full bottles are actually less expensive than similar venues.
