Visionary restaurateur Michelle Garnaut went against popular opinion in January 1999 (people told her no one would go "all the way" to the Bund to eat) when she opened Shanghai's landmark restaurant - M on the Bund. Not that Ms. Garnaut was new to the business, as her wildly successful M at the Fringe has been serving up delcious dishes to Hong Kong diners since 1989.
For this reason, we highly recommend a visit to the "birthplace" of Shanghai's restraurant scene for all first-time visitors to the City, as well as those in search of Shanghai's best restaurants (and views).
If possible, arrive early and enjoy a drink at M's Glamour Bar on the other end of the 7th floor of the historic Nissin Shipping building - with it's own spectacular views of the Bund.
The food at M on the Bund can be classified as Fusion, whose flavors range from the comforting to the novel, from Western to Middle Eastern, always grounded in classical European techniques. Although the menu changes with each season, some of the items on the menu can be found throughout the year, inclduing foie gras, salmon, leg of lamb, and rib eye.
Reservations are essential. And weather permitting, ask for a table out on the balcony for one of Shanghai's best dining views of the Bund and Pudong skyline.
